STK: Trendy steakhouse dining in Westwood Village

STK Steakhouse Restaurant
The atmosphere is chic nightclub meets contemporary restaurant.  It is the modern concept steakhouse encountering the stylish lounge. STK is located at the W Hotel in Westwood Village and this steakhouse restaurant is all the rage in more ways than one.

This is the hottest trend from the One Group in dining. Placing their restaurants in a hotel gives greater appeal especially in Westwood where hotels are scarce and fine dining needs to have a current bend to attract a more diverse crowd. In this case it is the UCLA college students and their families. It is also the neighboring communities of Westwood, Westwood Hills and Brentwood Glen.

STK was originally located on La Cienega but moved to the W nearly two years ago. While the One Group only has one restaurant in Los Angeles, they have 14 other restaurants around the world including Bagatelle, Asellina and Radio Rooftop to name a few.

The STK Chef is Robert Liberato. In addition to running this steakhouse kitchen in Los Angeles, he is the Executive Chef overseeing all One Group’s in the western region.  Each restaurant in his region has a different menu depending on the location and city.

I dined at STK on a Monday evening and although not the busiest day, the restaurant had a constant flow of customers. The décor is very hip with a purple tinge to the lighting. Beware many of my photos have this purple glow almost like neon.

Though we chose wines by the glass, the wine list at STK is quite good and extensive.

I was quite impressed with the food. My partner in restaurant crime that night was SoCal Restaurant Show host, Andrew Harris. We were treated to a sampling of the restaurant’s cuisine.

Appetizers:

Our starters included The Tamai Farms Heirloom Beets with smoked cashews, charred grapes and Vadouvan oil. Being a lover of beets this was a must try salad. It was very tasty and refreshing. The smoked cashews add an interesting almost savory flavor. As a result the cashews complemented the sweetness of the beets and grapes. The salad normally includes some Valbfresco feta but due to allergies it was left off.

Another favorite was the Beef Tartare with Italian capers, whole grain Dijon mustard and topped with poached quail eggs. The presentation was interesting because it came in a jar, making this dish more like spread to put on croutons.

The final appetizer was Diver Scallops with fava puree, pea tendrils, aji aioli and shaved garlic. The scallops were tender and cooked perfectly.

Accompanying this course I choose the Bertaud Belieu Rose. The fresh acidity in this wine was perfect the above three dishes.

Entrees:

By far my favorite was the Duroc Pork with mint salsa, pork belly, pickled rhubarb and basil oil. The Duroc pork is free range. The pork was tender and the best I have encounter at a restaurant. I would go back to STK just for this dish.

While dining at a steakhouse one must have steak.  Our selection was the New York Strip Steak was also very tasty.

We rounded out our meal with the market fish. On this day it was the Sea Bass with Brussels sprouts, mushrooms and white asparagus.

Knowing we had two meat dishes we choose the Terrazas De Los Andes Malbec to pair with this course.

Sides:

STK has a nice selection of side dishes. Our meal included Parmesan Truffle Fries, a must, as they were really quite good, Seasonal Mushrooms and Spicy Broccolini.

Desserts:

For the decadent the Chocolate Chip Cookie, a warm baked cookie with vanilla ice cream should not be missed.

Sorbet lovers don’t miss the Trio of Seasonal Sorbets. The pear sorbet was the best. It tasted like I was were biting into a fresh pear.

For those with dietary issues STK definitely accommodates your restrictions along with making your dining experience a memorable and exceptional one.

What is up next for the W and STK? The One Group is opening this summer The Hideout. It will be an outdoor restaurant at the W. I look forward to experience this outdoor restaurant in the near future.

It is always good to find a local venue where you can come and enjoy and exceptionally good meal. STK does just that. While watching the dining scene in Westwood Village over the years, the growth of more trendy and upscale restaurants like STK is elevating the foodie experience as well as dynamics of this community.
